Camping is one of America’s greatest pastimes, and we love the scenery throughout the Surprise, AZ area. But, with so much beautiful public space and so many square miles of available land, how do you choose the best place to camp in your RV? Our three top picks are Coon Bluff, Usery Mountain, and Cave Creek. These locations are within an hour of our RV storage facility in Surprise.
Coon Bluff – Mesa – 1 Hour
If your soul is hungry for the sights, sounds, and smells of nature, you can’t go wrong with Coon Bluff. Sweeping terrain featuring mountains, beautiful foliage, and winding streams, this is the perfect backdrop for your family’s next best memories. Camping is only allowed between October 1 and March 31 on the weekends and around select holidays. Coon Bluff is part of the Tonto National Forest and offers an accessible toilet building and allows leashed pets. You’ll enjoy fishing, picnicking, and swimming throughout the area.
Reserve your site as soon as possible if you would like to spend a night in absolute peace and quiet. Make sure to grab your recreational vehicle out of RV storage a few days ahead of time to ensure that it’s fully stocked and road ready.
Usery Mountain Regional Park – Mesa – 1 Hour
Usery Mountain Regional Park is another must-visit that’s only 10 minutes from Coon Bluff and an hour from Surprise. While the scenery may be similar, Maricopa County offers lots of activities at Usery Mountain. These include ranger-led talks, moonrise walks, mountain biking, desert animal discovery, and home school programs.
If you plan to book a site here, you can call 833.505.0779 or book online for a rolling reservation up to six months out. Cancellations are rare, but you can always check the website as you get closer to your preferred travel date if you’re unable to make a reservation in advance.
Cave Creek Regional Park – Cave Creek – 45 Minutes
Cave Creek Regional Park is a unique setting located just 45 minutes away from your RV storage facility in Surprise. It also has one of the most colorful histories of any site in the area. It’s the location of the 1873 brawl between US troops in the Apache tribe. Ancient natives made what we now call Cave Creek Regional Park their home from 800 A.D. to 1400 A.D., and you can still see remnants of their existence, including pit houses and petroglyphs, scattered throughout the park.
There are plenty of campsites throughout Cave Creek, and you can expect to pay around $40 per night for a shaded RV site with water and electricity. Cave Creek Regional Park is very family-friendly, with activities that range from stargazing to horseback riding to biking and hiking.
When you live in Surprise, you have plenty of RV camping opportunities. The above are just a few of our favorites, and each is welcoming to visitors of all ages.
